Grammy-award winning singer-songwriter and violinist Amanda Shires has shared a new track with a live music video for her song “Empty Cups” featuring the vocals of Maren Morris and guitarist Jason Isbell. This brand new song is the third track off of Amanda’s very highly awaited new album out July 29, Take It Like A Man. “Empty Cups” is a soft song with both Amanda and Maren’s voice complementing each other as they paint the imagery of heartbreak and sadness. The live video has a beautiful aesthetic with bright flowers, greenery, an old school style chair and both singers front and center in calming colored outfits. The lyrics are relatable, heartfelt and very poetic. A timeless sound with lots of vulnerability.

“I recorded “Empty Cups” after everyone left because I didn’t want to accidentally cry or get a shaky voice in front of my friends. I asked Maren to sing on this one because our voices blend like sisters and because I knew that wherever my voice wavered, she’d be steady.”

“Empty Cups” dives into a relationship of one partner putting in all the effort and not feeling like everything they are giving is being reciprocated back. The lyrics portray that Amanda was always trying to keep the spark alive, keep the relationship fresh and exciting. Seems like no matter what she did it’s like she was asking for too much. Instead of love, she received slamming doors that it rattled her heart as emptiness filled the air. The live video is soft, full of nature and feels very comforting. A relationship didn’t work out but the flowers, the greenery makes you want to appreciate the little things. A chance for new beginnings as a relationship dies out, other things will sprout. Time to have with yourself where you can self-reflect, gain understanding and come to terms with whatever happened.

Consequence premiered the video and described “Empty Cups” as lyrical tour-de-force and the audience will become hooked on the shimmering details that seem important in the wake of calamity. Stereogum called it an “intense rumination” while the arrangement is grand and sweeping. The New York Times raved it was poetic, a provocative torch with an electrifying performance. Both Amanda and Maren sing the heck out the song making you feel every lyric. The piano in the background is so peaceful and helps draw you in. A ballad with a little country twang to it. Amanda takes you on the journey of all the heartfelt tender moments that she once enjoyed but something was always missing. Instead of holding on to those little moments, she started to see the bigger picture and love could not hold them together any longer.

Now, wipe your tears and pull yourself together because Amanda is going on tour in September and runs all the way to the end of November. See down below for all tour dates and purchase tickets here.
