King Canary is an indie rock band based in Seattle, Washington. Its two songwriters come from eclectic musical backgrounds, both previously being in the black metal band, Morrow, Trevor studying jazz guitar and classical composition at university, and Drew writing his own experimental jazz and beat-based music. While these backgrounds might not always be immediately recognizable in their music, they show the attention to detail in their arrangements and the vast array of sounds that King Canary draws from. The band writes music that freely combines these influences into a cohesive and catchy whole.

“Always the Same” is a cathartic and energetic push against daily monotony. Although it was written in pre-COVID times, the song has taken on a new meaning with its purposely loud and catchy beat against the drum of day-to-day monotony. Not only is the main message of the pursuit of more shape and meaning in life highly relatable, but it perfectly showcases the blended style that the duo is known for.

The indie rock instrumental lays down an upbeat backdrop, which isn’t the first thing one would normally think of in regards to a day-to-day routine. Intentionally, the framework set by the guitar and drum workings is the complete opposite of the lyrics which convey a mundane message. A harmonious duet of the repetitive feeling is set between ample instrumental solos, which get progressively more boisterous before settling into an acoustic guitar plucking to end the song.
