Alvvays Partner Up with Stardew Valley Creator, Eric Barone, On Music Video for “Many Mirrors”

Alvvays made their long-awaited comeback last year with Blue Rev, the Toronto band’s first album release in five years. The Canadian outfit had previously released the albums Alvvays and Antisocialites, which had received immense praise and critical acclaim. The albums that Alvvays put out saw them dabble with jangly guitars and serene vocals to produce compelling indie pop. Blue Rev saw Alvvays at their most confident, as they added distortion and noise effects to their indie and dream pop style of music. The album was met with positive critical acclaim, with Pitchfork ranking it as their third best album of the year.

From the album, “Many Mirrors” was one of the most notable songs on it, and in particular one that highlighted the shift that Alvvays had undergone with their newest album as it featured prominent distortion effects. This distortion and fuzzy noise work in tandem with jangly guitars on this track.

The lyrics are introspective and reflect upon a long-lasting relationship. They marvel at the relationship managing to last this long, as well as the people in the relationship still being able to love each other the same way they did at the start of it.

Now that we’ve passed through many mirrors

I can’t believe we’re still the same

As well as reflecting on all the time that has passed, the lyrics also look towards the future. Despite spending so much time together already, there is still so much to look forward to.

Light years away

And you’ve got so much life to offer in you

For the music video, Alvvays partnered up with Eric Barone, who is known as the creator of the game Stardew Valley. For people unfamiliar, the game sees you take over your deceased grandfather’s farm, located in Stardew Valley. The game has been described as quiet, peaceful and tranquil among people who have played it. The music video for “Many Mirrors” shares a similar vibe. It features gameplay as our main characters trapeze across several beautifully painted screens. Some of these screens include an orange lit city at night, a top floor of a building filled with potted plants and a train going through the dessert with hot air balloons in the background. The music video has a pixelated style to it and is similar to not only Stardew Valley, but also to games like Deltarune and Undertale.
