Garage Opera Act Fencer Releases Single “Joseph Courtney”

LA-based rock trio Fencer is something of an oddity in today’s musical landscape: where many bands have veered away from rock and have infused their work with other musical genres, Fencer’s music doubles down and celebrates their rock roots. Dubbing themselves a “garage opera band,” Fencer consists of vocalist Field Cate, bassist Scott Sauve, and drummer Cameron Sauve. Their songwriting indulges in different elements of the rock music genre, with lyrics often referring to songwriter Cate’s struggles with mental health.

Fencer brings their sonic ethos to their single “Joseph Courtney.” Released in November 2022, the track starts with Cate’s vocals paired with a sturdy guitar. There is just a hint of bluesy plucking in the guitar line before the drum and bass come in. Suave rides the bass drum and snares until the song explodes into a seriously crunchy guitar riff. As Cate sings “Welcome to the stage” in the verse, there’s a synchronicity between the driving force of the drums, the fuzz of the guitar, and Cate’s whimsical vocal delivery.

Towards the middle of the song, Cate takes on the persona of the titular Joseph Courtney. “My name is Joseph Courtney” Cate wines through distorted vocals, before a wailing guitar solo that leads into the final chorus. In an interview with Music Scene Media, Cate says of the character Joseph Courtney:

“He’s a star. Someone and something I aspire to be. A concept that cures my insecurities and allows me to lose a bit of sanity.”

The song is meant to be listened to at high volume, preferably driving on a dirt road, with head banging and wind flowing through hair. “Joseph Courtney” is a great teaser for the drop of their self-titled debut album, Fencer, scheduled to release on February 3rd, 2023.

For now, listen to Fencer’s previous release, Sanitarium.
