Coming in hot after the unanimous hit “Espresso,” Sabrina Carpenter releases “Please Please Please.” It is the second lead single off her upcoming album Short n’ Sweet, set to release on August 23rd. Created in collaboration with Grammy-winning songwriters Jack Antonoff and Amy Allen, the track charms listeners with its dreamy instrumentation and humorous-yet-real lyrics.

At the end of the “Espresso” music video, Carpenter was arrested in an old-fashioned, beachy cop car while an unknown tune played on the outer speaker. “Please Please Please” answers this mystery and continues the story both visually and sonically. Directed by Bardia Zeinali and co-starring Barry Keoghan, a cheeky yet sincere love story comes to life (with the help of real-life chemistry, of course). Despite her partner leading her to trouble, she tags along, attempting to reign him in.

The song begins with a lush burst of synths, followed by the main groovy guitar riff. With each passing second, the mind transports into a daydream. The lyrics alternate narratives, partially reading like a reflective journal entry, and partially speaking directly to her partner. They immerse the listener into Carpenter’s perspective, marked by her signature sarcasm:

I heard that you’re an actor

So act like a stand-up guy

Whatever devil’s inside you

Don’t let him out tonight

The central message is painfully relatable, as she begs her partner to show a good face to others because her ego is on the line. She can endure antics and heartbreak behind closed doors and would prefer to keep them there. Why ruin happiness with a potential “I told you so”?

And please, please, please

Don’t bring me to tears when I just did my makeup so nice

Praised for her exceptional Coachella debut this past April, Carpenter recently made her first live performance of “Please Please Please” at Governor’s Ball in NYC, capturing hearts once again. Whether it’s a festival or a concert, her irresistible stage presence commands the space. The hype for Sabrina Carpenter will continue to live and thrive, as she’s becoming what fans call the “next main pop girl.”
