Harold López-Nussa released his picturesque new album, Timba a la Americana, last week, off of which “Hope” has shone through. The record marks López-Nussa’s Blue Note debut, vibrant with the Cuban pianist’s recent decision to leave his homeland for France. López-Nussa and the tight knit band behind “Hope” raise a sense of warmth and community, striking the perfect chord within Timba a la Americana.

Upbeat, clever, and quick, “Hope” is an effortless communication of López-Nussa’s point of view, told by his intricate method on the keys. The percussive claps behind the melody bring a connective, celebratory air, cheering on the delicate work of the rest of the instruments. López-Nussa shines on piano, accompanied by his brother, Ruy Adrián López-Nussa, on drums, Grégoire Maret on harmonica, Luques Curtis on bass, and Bárbaro “Machito” Crespo on congas. The group floats through chords and emanates a sense of contented calm. Each band member has a distinct voice, but they each find a wonderful repertoire amongst themselves in the melody, building off of the talent of the others to deliver a heightened, personal track.

“I wouldn’t have imagined – even in my wildest dreams – to put out an album with Blue Note Records; the record label of the greatest jazz artists I’ve ever heard. I remember listening to Miles Davis, Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Clifford Brown, Bud Powell, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, etc. on old vinyl at my grandmother Muky’s house. Being a part of this label’s history – even as small as my part is – still seems crazy to me and it gives me goosebumps. I couldn’t be more grateful today!  I can only extend my sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed one way or another to make this record come true.”
