Women Build Strength in Paris Paloma’s “as good a reason”

Paris Paloma never fails to create astoundingly poetic anthems. The U.K.-based singer-songwriter, 22, returned September 1 with “as good a reason.” The single portrays how women find beauty and strength among one another amid oppressive circumstances.

An expert in storytelling, Paloma weaves together an intergenerational narrative of younger women or girls looking to their elders for advice on how to survive in society. The key, Paloma sings, is spite.

Every time you are succeeding
There’s an old man somewhere, seething
And spite’s as good a reason to take his power

With an alt-folk, contemporary sound imbued with immense power, Paloma’s gentle yet commanding vocals are magical. “as good a reason” encourages women to rise up in their communities — and it sounds hauntingly beautiful while doing so.

Paloma said “as good a reason” follows “labour,” their song from earlier this year that went viral as a feminist anthem depicting the devastation felt as a result of inequality in cis-het relationships. This single moves into the realm of exploring how women build each other up and find safe, supportive spaces. The two songs complement each other, continuing to build on Paloma’s exploration of gender’s impact on society.

Paloma will perform “as good a reason” alongside past hits like “the fruits” or “yeti” at European shows throughout September and October.
