Birthh has released the cinematic new single “Hyperdrive” ahead of Moonlanded, her third record, out this September. Raised in Italy and based in Brooklyn, Birthh has captured a kaleidoscopic feeling in the alt-pop track that feels like something from a dream. In Moonlanded, she revisits her childhood in the Tuscan countryside after unexpectedly starting a new life in Brooklyn, making space for herself over ten powerful tracks. Moonlanded is available for pre-order now, but “Hyperdrive” offers a hopeful, energetic peek inside the artist’s heart on the upcoming album, taking listeners on a journey through outer space.

“There was something that I loved so deeply about it–to this day it has probably some of my favorite lyrics I’ve ever written–but I could never find a way to finish it that felt true to the soul of the song.”

From the very first beat, Birthh captures the audience. Vocals flit between notes over mismatched instrumentals, where the drum beat carries against the cadence of her voice in a unique but striking manner. The chorus sparkles on a high octave with a gentle touch of handbells, elevating the already vibrant symphony. Creativity bursts from the track’s seams, bouncing between registers with drive and electricity. Finally, the end notes of the song glitch lightly, a tiny techno flare that ties it all together. It is an alluring taste into the album, a project intended to be “warm, open, and ambitious,” according to Birthh.

“This is my journey into what it feels like to be a sensitive human in their 20s in the 2020s, through all the pressure coming from within and from the world we were left with. Landing is finding a way to stay present and to love the process, it’s about creating space for ourselves and realizing that each of us is the protagonist in our own story.”

Moonlanded was written, recorded, and produced alongside collaborator London O’Connor in Birthh’s apartment studio, aptly named The Moonbase. Having released her first record, Born In The Woods, at just 19 years old, she throws herself into authenticity in this third record. Before “Hyperdrive,” Birthh released “Jello” off of the album, a song for crushing accompanied by a music video that depicts pure queer joy. The strings in the album were recorded in Milan by Grammy-winning sound engineer Tommaso Colliva and mixed by Grammy-winner Robert Dorsey. Lead vocals, beats, guitars, and keys were all captured from The Moonbase, producing an intimate window into Birthh’s humanity.

“We feel so much and so deeply. We feel the triumph of being alive as much as we feel the struggle that comes with it. All at once. This album is my mom. It’s my dad. It’s my love. It’s my home. It’s the grounding force of gravity and the dreams of escaping it.”

Stream “Hyperdrive” and check out the video for “Jello,” out everywhere. Be sure to pre-save Moonlanded, out September 1st.
