Australian Artist MAY-A Releases Her Own Version Of Flume’s “Say Nothing”
On June 3rd, rising artist and Flume collaborator MAY-A released her own version of “Say Nothing.” Originally a collaboration between her and the aforementioned Flume, MAY-A’s version strips the song of most electronic elements and makes it predominantly vocals and acoustic instrumentation. Where the lyrics have always been a lamentation of a doomed relationship, this stripped-back production allows the pain in MAY-A’s voice to carry the day in an exceptionally beautiful performance.
The background vocals, the atmospheric synthesizers, and the acoustic guitar provide a perfect soundscape for MAY-A to showcase her true vocal ability. While her performance on the original Flume track was great, this version is absolutely the perfect expression of the song’s sentiment. The original was released back on 2/2/22 (which is just an exceptional release date), and it allowed MAY-A to be one of Flume’s special guests at his Coachella performance (alongside Caroline Polachek, Vince Staples, Tove Lo, and Beck, to name a few). It also gave MAY-A a broader audience to reach with this version, so we have to give credit where credit is due.
On a sonic level, though, MAY-A’s version is completely different from the original. Where the Flume version is a painful screaming match or argument that ends a relationship on bad terms, MAY-A’s version is the painful realization by an individual that their relationship is coming to an end and there’s nothing they can do. The external pain of Flume’s version is internalized in MAY-A’s version, and it completely changes the sound.

She was nominated for Rolling Stone Australia’s “Best New Artist;” received an ARIA nomination for her debut EP, Don’t Kiss Ur Friends; and is set to open for Flume on select dates of his US tour as well as the entirety of his Australian tour this fall. MAY-A is definitely one to watch, and her version of “Say Nothing” solidifies that status.
