Flagship Romance Releases Chilled Acoustic Version of “You’re My Best Friend”
If there were ever a duo for which “You’re My Best Friend” by Queen was a fitting track, it would certainly be Flagship Romance. This harmonic alt-folk duo describes themselves as “two best friends who also happened to be married” – a description many of us hope to achieve one day – so it makes perfect sense that they would choose to cover this iconic track by an iconic band to reflect their friendship and partnership. Flagship Romance transforms the original track, written by Queen’s bass player, John Deacon, for his wife, into a chill and organic version that teases out the already sentimental messaging to a new level of harmonic sweetness.
In this cover of “You’re My Best Friend,” the love that is so intertwined within the lyrics is certainly elevated. Between the acoustic approach and the delicate vocals, listeners feel an instantaneous and undeniable warmth all the way from the beginning through the end, which makes for a very special listening experience. There is a tender and vulnerable sensibility to the cover – everything is laid out in the open in what sounds and feels like a very intimate exchange between two lovers that we’re all lucky to have gotten a glimpse of. It takes a lot of guts to cover a band like Queen, but Flagship Romance has certainly proven that with a love like theirs, a truly beautiful cover is possible.
