Not Just Another “Slow Song:” The Knocks’ New Single With Dragonette Is Electro-Pop Perfection

On February 18th, American electronic duo The Knocks released their latest single, “Slow Song,” featuring Canadian band Dragonette. Filled with a killer disco bass line, strings, atmospheric synthesizers, and a four-on-the-floor dance beat, “Slow Song” is the opposite of its name. This juxtaposition is already incredible, but there’s so much more to this track than a subversion of expectations with the name.

The vocals from Martina Sorbara are astounding. The lyrics are good, but it’s the vocal performance by Sorbara that nails home the point that the narrator of the song has the subject wrapped around their finger. The power behind her voice is palpable, and the way The Knocks produced the track allows it to sit in front of everything else in a way that isn’t overbearing.

Which leads me to another point: this song just sounds perfect. There are no moments on this track that feel overly loud or soft, the dynamic contrast is present and working, and every sonic choice aids the song. Nothing feels out of place, and it all synthesizes to create a perfect electro-pop song.

“‘Slow Song’ with Dragonette heralds The Knocks’ hugely anticipated third studio album, being released on April 29th.” If “Slow Song” is any indication, this “as-yet-untitled” album is going to be full of what The Knocks are known for: phenomenal bass lines, excellent vocal performances from indie rock icons, and exquisite production. This is going to be one amazing year for The Knocks.

In addition to the track itself, The Knocks put out a music video featuring Aquaria from RuPaul’s Drag Race! The track takes on a completely different meaning with the video, and it’s an incredible piece of art in its own right. Check it out below, and let us know what you think! “Slow Song” is yet another incredible song from The Knocks, and it’s going to be an exciting year for them!

Obsessed with all things music. Finished that MFA, so now I’m apparently a master of this. Bouncing around state borders, going wherever. If you see me at a show, say hey!
