Black Light Odyssey Deliver Epic EP The System

It is with the utmost sincerity that I must admit that at this stage of my life, I don’t typically listen to EDM of any kind. A genre that once consumed my life now collects dust in the nostalgic recesses of my mind. It’s not as if it’s abandoned me altogether, it just feels like a former lover who has moved away and only keeps in touch through Instagram. Liking some of my photos but never really engaging me directly. With that being said, EDM decided to slide into my DM’s the other night in the form of Black Light Odyssey

The algorithms of Spotify put the single “Deiche” from their latest EP The System in my weekly discovery. However, it was so out of place amongst the usual vibe that I thought it was a glitch in the matrix. More often than not my mixes are filled with Indie Rock or Shoegaze. I remember restarting the song while putting my headphones on. My eyes shut as the quick pace of the beat thundered into my ears. My entire body started bouncing and I didn’t stop dancing for 16 minutes and 36 seconds. To clarify, I am 38 years old and haven’t moved like this in ages. I can’t exactly explain why my brain suddenly decided to reconnect to this type of music but this LA-based duo struck a nerve inside of me that hasn’t been touched in two decades.

Black Light Odyssey have spent a decade remixing the likes of Depeche Mode, IAMX, Yazoo, and Erasure and it seems like they can certainly hold their own in the world of original material. This EP has had my attention for days now and I genuinely hope it sparks a tour and possibly a release on Vinyl. Each song flows fluidly from one to the next and there isn’t a single disappointing beat among the 4 song composition. Highly recommended for fans of Industrial, Goth, and Darkwave genres of electronic music.  After one listen you will understand why they say “Your body belongs to the system”
