The critically acclaimed singer-songwriter from Korea, Yves brings us her latest enchanting EP titled DIM ∞.
Yves is known for her multi-genre talent, experimenting with genres such as house and hyperpop. Her previous EP I DID: Bloom (Deluxe) explored the depths of her artistic expression as well as self reflection and finding balance with one’s chaotic emotions. Her two EPs LOOP and I DID, which she released in 2024, doubled down on her success as a solo artist following her time with the K-Pop girl group LOONA. Earning spots on Billboard’s “Best K-Pop Albums of 2024” lists for both their mid-year and annual lists, and spots on “Best K-Pop Tracks of 2024” lists in Dazed, PopMatters, and Consequence.
The former member of K-Pop group LOONA, Yves, presents her latest EP DIM ∞. The five-track body of work consists of unique versions of the fan favorite track “DIM” which is featured on her highly successful EP I DID: Bloom (Deluxe). “DIM” made waves, reaching 4.9 million streams with the official sound garnering 5.5 billion views on TikTok. Furthermore, celebrities like Benny Blanco and Jojo Siwa, as well as brands like Champions League and WWE and 1.9 billion others used the song in their own creations. With I DID: Bloom (Deluxe) and DIM ∞, Yves presents us the music she always wanted to make, symbolizing her breaking free from everything that held her back.
DIM ∞ takes the beloved original track “DIM” and transforms it into a number of beautiful edits. The song itself appears to be a reflection of her experience with her prior band LOONA and the hardships she faced under her previous label. It dives into topics of losing control of your own future, uncertainty and hopelessness. However, it also tries to look at a future where breaks free from her shackles and is truly free to shape who she is.
“DIM (Nostalgic Edit)” takes the original song’s beats and melodies and turns them into a purely instrumental piece. It transforms the experience into a hauntingly beautiful soundscape that sounds like the echo of a long gone era we can’t return to. It conveys a bittersweet feeling that combines a sense of melancholy with a hopeful gaze towards the future, fueled by the lessons learned and power gained from them.
As the title suggests, “DIM (Slowed)” slows the original song “DIM” down, giving it a more melancholic impact. The effect makes each moment and each line of the song linger, hence amping up the emotions. “DIM (Sped Up)” on the other hand, does the opposite, giving the song a more energetic aura. While the slowed down version feels like it lingers on the past, the sped up version charges ahead into the future with euphoria.
“DIM (Fade)” is once more a track that shines through its instrumentals. It does also make use of vocals, however they are distorted and unintelligible, thus purely adding to the soundscape. The song creates a wonderful atmosphere worthy of the finale of the EP.
