Producer and DJ Tape B recently came out with an exclusive SoundCloud mixtape, Vibe Check Vol. 2, which features a diverse range of seven remixes. Mixing his heavy-hitting, “wub” bass style with his affinity for nostalgic sounds results in fresh interpretations of hits like “Counting” by Hamdi, “No Scrubs” by TLC, and “Pocketful of Sunshine” by Natasha Bedingfield. Succeeding Vibe Check Vol. 1, Vol. 2’s inclusion of hip-hop hits adds a chant-able element, hyping up a crowd easily.
“DOPAMINE x NO TYPE VIP” samples Etta James and Rae Sremmurd, an unlikely duo, but it works nonetheless. As a mixtape opener, this track effectively hits the gas with a neck-snapping bassline.
“Hamdi – Counting (Tape B Edit)” eases into the drop with light trap percussion, but a crunchy, gritty saw-like sound creeps up in the background. True to a trap-dubstep fusion track, the beat is more danceable and rhythmic.
“Schoolboy Q – Hands On The Wheel (IDHS x Tape B Flip)” opens up the sonic space, resonating with alien-like sounds and echoes. As the vocal line continues, tension builds. This track contains a certain charm reminiscent of big 2010s bass music. Instant classic.
Speaking of 2010s, next is “Skrillex – Bangarang feat. Sirah (Tape B Flip).” Tape B managed to extract just enough elements from a rather busy song to create a subdued, downtempo vibe. Although the calmest track, it remains dynamic.
Throwing back to the late 90s, “TLC – No Scrubs (Tape B Flip)” plays the iconic melody over a classy selection of synths and “boops.” The second drop switches the rhythm up in a subtle yet satisfying way.
He then fast forwards to 2008 for “Natasha Bedingfield – Pocketful of Sunshine (Tape B Flip).” Natasha’s euphoric, belting chorus acts as the perfect build-up to an intense percussive breakdown. Around 1:50 min, the track transitions into bass-house territory.
Closing out the mixtape is “T-Pain & Mike Jones – I’m N Luv (with A Stripper) (Tape B Flip).” A party hit on its own, Tape B transforms it into a chill drum and bass song.
All in all, Vibe Check Vol. 2 is for those who live for the confluence of throwback hits and dubstep, bass, and dance genres. Or as he calls it, “Old School x New School.” Tape B’s range and intention becomes clear while listening, with each track showing a unique twist.
Born in Türkiye but raised in Florida, Tape B has been working his way up in the EDM scene since his 2015 debut, catching the ears and eyes of acts like Deadbeats, UKF, and Wakaan, as well as gaining support from Zeds Dead, Peekaboo, Wooli, and more. This Fall he is set to tour, playing 23 shows across the U.S., plus one date in Montréal, Canada. To experience an exciting live set, click here for dates, locations, and tickets.
