The sound of the internet! Pop duo Magdalena Bay releases new song “Unconditional” with deluxe reissue of their debut album “Mercurial World”
We’ve all spent time in some form of virtual reality. Even now, dear reader, you are viewing this post through the lens of the world wide web. The internet revolution of the past two decades has changed the world as we know it. But what does the internet sound like?
In 2016, Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin formed the Pop duo Magdalena Bay. Originally members of a prog rock outfit, they decided to apply their songwriting skills to pop music. The emergent sound became something we can only describe as the sound of the internet. Although their songwriting is firmly grounded in the world of pop, their sound features copious amounts of noise and distortion paralleling many soundscapes found in hyper pop and psychedelic music.
I am made of love
Emotion and understanding
I, am I enough?
Always crying out for something
On 23 September 2022 Magdalena Bay released the single “Unconditional” paralleling the deluxe reissue of their album “Mercurial World” as well as an accompanying music video. The duo doesn’t hold back the strangeness in their production while the music video cranks up the weirdness into the stratosphere. A heavy bass driven song, the grooves of “Mercurial World” will make your body move regardless of your dance skill level. The video is a modern reimagining of the early era of the internet which admittedly was a very strange place. It centers around Magdalena Bay’s dream birthday party and has a visual style which seems at least partially inspired by the iconic youtube series “Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared” combined with an LSD trip to outer space. Overall the music video fits the duo’s world building perfectly and if you enjoyed it as much as we did be sure to check out their TikTok and Youtube channel for more out-of-this-world content.
We hope you have enjoyed this brief foray into the sound of the internet. If you would like to further connect with Magdalena Bay be sure to check out their website magdalenabaymusic.com. Follow Glasse Factory for more news of new releases!
