The Power Of Eileen Torrez’s Single, “The Kind”

Anyone looking for an empowering song with soul-stirring vocals and a unique yet stripped-down instrumental will love Eileen Torrez’s “The Kind,” the latest single from her upcoming album, Water + Salt, set to drop this summer.

“The Kind” combines elements of R&B and hip-hop with rugged beats and an ethereal electro-pop ambiance. It utilizes body-based percussion and layered vocal harmonies to create a sound seemingly powered by nature itself. This strength is further brought about by the song’s lyrics, especially as she sings, “I am fury/I am mother/I am the force of love the fire that comes to wake you up/You better hear my sound.” Despite its beautiful soundscape, an underlying feeling of anger and determination is laced into the song’s foundation.

Torrez further details the inspiration behind “The Kind,”

“‘The Kind’ came to me differently than other songs have—it was like this piercing signal from the ground through my feet that electrocuted me with its intent. I felt like it was my responsibility to write it. The first line: ‘I am not the kind to give up, to get over, I am not the kind to let go,’ is one I really relate to because that’s how I think of myself as a person. But as more of the lyrics came to me and I sang the song myself for the first time, I realized it was not really me singing; it was a voice that needed to speak through me.”

Alongside the song’s release, Torrez dropped the single’s music video. It features the artist singing straight to the camera, switching between scenes of her in a white room with windows and a garden setting where she holds handfuls of dirt. The straightforwardness of the music video perfectly captures the vibe and soul of “The Kind.”
