The Hu Shares Second Album, “Rumble Of Thunder,” And New Single’s Music Video
Mongolian rock band The Hu released their sophomore album Rumble of Thunder on Sept. 2, along with a music video for their new single, “Bie Biyelegee.” On Spotify, many of the songs on the album have already accumulated thousands of streams, with “Black Thunder” receiving over 1.1 million streams and “This Is Mongol” receiving over two million streams. With a wide fanbase, The Hu has toured with bands like Megadeath and Five Finger Death Punch, introducing the world to their Mongolian culture through music. On top of portraying their culture in their music, they also infuse Mongolian culture in their music videos, inviting listeners unfamiliar with Hunnu Rock to an intricate dive into their heritage.
In their latest album, Rumble of Thunder, The Hu incorporates their core values in the, technically, 12-track song (13 songs due to the extended version of “Black Thunder”). They aim to spread positivity and uplift those who listen to their music. Despite non-Mongolian people not understanding many of the lyrics, The Hu effectively guarantees that listeners can sense the impactful lyrics through their instrumentation.
While the tracks in the album fluctuate between a dark and bright tone, it’s imperative to note how the band merges their Hunnu rock with American modern rock. Certain songs have apparent fragments of the American music style. For example, the violins in “Upright Destined Mongol” carries substantial remnants of the devil’s violin part from “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” by the Charlie Daniels band.
The Hu integrates Hunnu rock with other components of rock into the album. For example, the first two tracks, “This Is Mongol” and “YUT Hövende,” are a bit hardcore; however, other tracks on Rumble of Thunder have a softer and brighter sound like “Triangle,” which has a light tone that can only mean the song is encouraging without knowing what they’re saying in the lyrics. “Teach Me” also has a brighter tone and features a modern rock sound, like Irish folk music, with a “dancy” vibe.
Hunno rock features “throaty” singing, and that style are strong in “Sell the World.” “Black Thunder” is a cinematic track that one would expect to hear in a dramatic scene in a movie. Ironically a lot of their songs like “This Is Mongol” and “Wolf Totem” (featuring Jacoby Shaddix and Papa Roach) were featured in the film The Retaliators’ motion picture soundtrack.
“Mother Nature” is another track with a smoother sound, and it surprisingly starts acoustically, like an indie folk/country sound. The harmonies in the track are airy and make the song less intense. “Bie Biyelegee” begins in the same manner as “Mother Nature,” and the vocal rhythms contribute to the song’s catchiness. The band released the music video for “Bie Biyelegee” this month.
Overall, Rumble of Thunder demonstrates who the band is and how authentic and versatile they are. A remarkable fact about The Hu is that they perform using original Mongolian instruments during their live performances: the Morin Khuur (horsehead fiddle), Tovshuur (Mongolian guitar), and Tumur Khuur (jaw harp).
“It was quite fun to record and most importantly, we had so much time to play and choose the best versions. Creative space and time are crucial, so we are very grateful to our friends and families who had our backs during the lengthy process. We also feel very much in sync in terms of understanding and complementing each other during performance. You will find that we have become an even closer unit in this album with many new surprises.”
