Vocals reminiscent of Dolores O’Riordan of the Cranberries, HIGHBOY draws the listener in with a spirited vocal performance that brings to life the story of moving to a new city. The song hooks the listener before introducing the vocals with the unique electro-pop instrumental at the very beginning.
HIGHBOY shares that “Everything We Need To Forget” is about the freedom and forgetfulness of moving to a new city where “the cops don’t know us yet.” The lyrics paint a description of leaving behind past troubles and burdens, shedding them for the magical potential of the future in a new place. This concept is introduced as the track opens with, “Tell me your name/ And I’ll tell you mine/ Show me the things / You have left behind.” The chorus also reinforces it with, “The sun is shining/ And the cops don’t know is yet/ And we’ve forgotten/ Everything we need to forget.” The song then ends with the repetition of the line, “Nobody knows us yet,” further emphasizing the message of wanting to shed the weight of the past.
Along with the single, HIGHBOY released a music video to accompany the song. The music video for “Everything We Need To Forget” combines collages shot in a stop-motion fashion full of bright colors and magazine cutouts.
