In terms of the album, Tegan discussed the process of how it came together, stating that,

“This was the first time where, while we were still drafting our demos, we were thinking about how the songs were going to work together. It wasn’t even just that Sara was making lyric changes or reorganizing the parts to my songs, it was that she was also saying to me, ‘This song is going to be faster,’ or ‘It’s going to be in a different key.’ But Sara effectively improves everything of mine that she works on.”

Sara jokingly adds,

“Maybe I am the renovator. I’m the house-flipper of the Tegan and Sara band.”

On top of the album and tour announcements, Tegan and Sara dropped a new single, “Yellow” accompanied by a music video. In honor of the release of “Yellow,” the duo held a live stream with fans, which can be viewed here. The song features fun voice effects along with an interesting combination of Tegan and Sara’s light, airy vocals, drum beats, and percussion to create a unique sound.

According to Sara, “Yellow,”

“Was written after we began to take steps to heal the bruises we have both carried with us since adolescence and early adulthood – wounds that never quite healed right and flare up seasonally, sending us spiraling backward in time. Are we doomed to remain forever 15, breaking up and breaking apart? I hope not.”

The lyrics incorporate this imagery of a bruise to show the non-linear path of healing, especially with wounds that haven’t been properly addressed and taken care of. This is reflected in the chorus with the lyrics, “This bruise ain’t black, it’s yellow (I’ve been gone too long)/ My sweet heart breaks, so be careful/ But this pain ain’t red, now it’s a yellow/ My sweet heart sings out like a devil/ This bruise ain’t black, it’s yellow (I’ve been gone too long).”

The music video was directed by Mark Myers and it playfully pays homage to Coldplay’s video for their own song, “Yellow.” The opening shot is that of the ocean, which pans to Tegan and Sara walking along the beach in windbreakers, similar to the opening shot and pan to Chris Martin in his windbreaker in Coldplay’s “Yellow” music video.

About the music video, Sara says that it was,

“Shot in Vancouver, a city that didn’t feel big enough to hold us both when we arrived there the first time. Twenty-two years later, we’re back, calling it home.”
