Sylvan Weekends “Symmetry” Reflects On Balancing The Highs And Lows Of Life

Life is a series of highs and lows, and Sylvan Weekends’ latest single, “Symmetry,” portrays this concept by combining indie-folk with a synth twist. Fans of duets such as Dodie and Tom Rosenthal’s “Years Years Bears” and Of Monster and Men, Matthew and Freya’s harmonies will be pulled in by their complementary voices.

Listen to “Symmetry” below:

“Symmetry” poses a series of questions showcasing symmetry in life, which is reflected in the structure of these questions. In the last part of the song, the band asks, “How am I meant to love/ When I know you’ll break my heart?” This is followed by, “How am I meant to live/ When I know that you are lost?” Although the first question seems to specifically refer to romantic love, the second question is more general and could apply to loved ones in general, whether it’s friends and family or a romantic partner.

Each of these questions is also punctuated by “Stop” or “But,” which reflects how people tend to obsess over these questions when facing life’s obstacles. Yet, it is easy to forget that with the bad comes the good, creating this symmetry, this balance, in life, one way or another, and that this is a balance that actively needs to be maintained. The band puts forth this concept in the question at the beginning of the chorus, “Don’t you see the symmetry/ Staring back at you and me?/ So make your mind up/ When we going to start?”

Overall, Sylvan Weekends’ latest track brings together an interesting concept, soft emotive vocals, and a dynamic instrumental to create a timeless classic.

Watch the lyric video for “Symmetry” below:

Sylvan Weekends combines the creative spirits of Matthew (Keston Cobblers Club), Freya, and Daniel. The band came together after they spent a night in a cabin in the woods, where they played and talked all night. As a result, Sylvan Weekends is a conglomerate of multiple genres based on each member’s preference (Matthew and folk, Freya and instrumental electro, and Daniel and rock), with a name that represents this very weekend they all came together.   “Symmetry” is one track from the band’s debut EP, Outliers, out in May of this year.
