Sylo Drops Deeply Personal EP, “blanket”
After taking some time to himself, Korean-Canadian artist and frontrunner of the alt-R&B renaissance, Sylo dropped his EP, titled, “blanket”. Dropped on Jan. 11, the seven track EP was meticulously put together, reflecting on Sylo’s latest era of life where he has learned deeply personal lessons.
“blanket” is a deeply personal EP for Sylo and that is transparent through each track. Through each song, each ballad, listeners are able to take away from such delicate yet deliberate messages and feelings. Despite the EP only being twenty one minutes long, the essence of “blanket” stays with listeners long after the last beat of What’s Left.
“blanket” kicks off with fan favorite, Millions. The acoustic instrumentals, the subtle beat playing in the background, and Sylo’s slow-burning vocals in this song eases listeners right into the track. Millions is a relatable track, where Sylo expresses his passion and drive for music and success but also his doubts for what’s to come.
Effortlessly transitioning from Millions is the track: Air, another single Sylo dropped in 2022. Air opens up with hypnotizing acoustic guitar instrumentals then is followed up by harmonizing vocals from Sylo. In this track, Sylo is seemingly talking about his failings as a partner and wanting to be better for his partner however being stuck in the same cycle
Drop A Pin is the next song to play and while not as upbeat as the first two tracks still imprints on listeners. Sylo’s mellow vocals match with its mellow beat. This beautiful and vulnerable track express Sylo’s own feelings of anxiety and overthinking tendencies. Through this song, he expresses how he finds sanctuary within this anonymous person, something most can relate to and appreciate.
Following is the brief yet poetic interlude, Dngrs Interlude. With only acoustic guitar, listeners are grounded by Sylo’s lyrics. This track is truly up to listeners to interpret for themselves. Much like poetry, this song engages with the listener in intimate and personal levels.
Taking a turn, listeners are given a more upbeat and faster paced track, Ginny. Though it may be upbeat, the lyrics can seem to contrast that light feeling from the instrumentals. This song seemingly romanticizes gin and how it washes away the broken woes of his life. In other words, this is a song about escaping the sad parts of life and through its buoyant tempo it imitates life’s short thrills.
October is the next track to play. It’s difficult to decipher the meaning of this song however, that is what makes it so unique and powerful. Could Sylo be talking about reconnecting with himself? Could it be about growth? Or maybe reconnecting with a loved one after seperation? Despite the route listeners take this track is deeply personal to both Sylo and the listener.
Lastly, “blanket” wraps up with the track, What’s Left. This track is all about letting go and letting yourself presence. The lyrics of this track are soft yet with a powerful message: allow yourself to be in the present.
“If I only knew there’s nothing left to be / Left to be / I’ll listen to sweet release, she tells me / ‘Rest in me’ / It’s not giving up / Only giving into life”
