Rapper/Singer-Songwriter/Producer Spencer Zachary just dropped his latest track “Open Water,” which is the title track for his upcoming album of the same name. Spencer described the song as not emo per se but it has a little bit thrown in there. The new track and project was recored over a week in Lago Puelo, Patagonia, Argentina, with the label El Sello Rojo in March of 2022 toward the end of Spencer’s three year stay traveling the southern hemisphere.
The message of “Open Water” is beautifully poetic with such well written deep lyrics. The song examines the moment in relationships when two people who share a home, food, their lives, thoughts and everything outside and in between, feel suddenly distant and out of touch, like an ocean has come between them and one can no longer feel the other, even though they may be in the same room. So close physically but mentally so distant.
“Far from oceans and expansion, the song and project recount my experience of an intense connection with a person and then the deep disconnection that followed as our own natural currents caused us to drift away from one another. In open water I lost something. And in open water I found a little bit more of myself.”

Spencer used this track as a way to process his feelings of guilt, things he feels he could’ve done better. All these intimate moments created with someone leaves you vulnerable, scared but at peace just as if you were floating in open water. A true masterpiece. “Open Water” was perfectly executed and thought out. This title really is setting the tone for the upcoming album, which already feels like a winner. Carefully and thoroughly crafted.
