Sometimes, we hurt the people we love. Queer, alt-pop artist SOFT LAD reminds us that these mess-ups are just a part of life in her most recent release, “The Human Condition.” It’s the first single off her second EP, slated for release this fall.
With a hooking melody and a catchy chorus, Sophie Galpin’s song comforts listeners stuck in a cycle of beating themselves up. She said the song was born from the worst hangover of her life. After getting drunk on New Year’s Eve during lockdown, the London-based artist hurt her friend badly. She then fell into a “disproportionate shame hole” for a week, even after she was forgiven fast.
We always seem to treat the people closest to us badly, and our loved ones really get to see all sides of us — the good, the bad and the ugly. But true, deep, authentic friendships allow space for f*** ups, apologies, repair and growing together. But most importantly, you are worthy of the kindness your loved ones afford you from yourself too. No one is perfect, we are all just trying our best.

SOFT LAD questions how she managed to mess things up so quickly, singing about her regrets and desire to make amends. But this incident “won’t be the last, and it ain’t the first.” Humans are prone to error — it’s just how things go. The lessons you learn along the way are more important and not worth dwelling on the past because your loved ones are with you through thick and thin.
The artist released “The Human Condition” alongside a music video, alternating shots of SOFT LAD emotionally singing to the camera with shots of friends interacting. With flashing transitions and doodles. including hearts and devil horns, the music video is eye-catching, and SOFT LAD’s disappointment with herself and desire to be better is almost palpable.
The single marks SOFT LAD’s return after her debut EP Maximum Feels. Fans may also recognize Galpin for her in bands with Self Esteem and SOAK.
Being a multi-instrumentalist in all sorts of bands meant that I was a bit of a musical chameleon, and found it difficult to find my own voice as an artist for a long time. But once I stopped trying so hard and let the songs come out, SOFT LAD began and it felt obvious.
