BNYX®️ and Lil Yachty are unrelentingly free in their creative endeavors. The former has steadily become one of hip-hops most dynamic and sought after talents, even being named “Best Hip-Hop Producer Alive” by Complex in 2023. His versatility has led to hit collaborations ranging anywhere from a punk rock track with Fousheé to a slinky ‘80s-style R&B song with Zack Fox. The ladder, a powerhouse product of the Atlanta rap scene, has curated a musical identity that also refuses to stay stagnant. While Yachty’s most recent solo album Let’s Start Here is a psychedelic alternative rock album, it was followed by a slew of singles like “Strike (Holster)” which built on the SoundCloud era sound that propelled him into the zeitgeist of 2016 hip hop.
Together, these singular artistic forces created “SMOKING IN THE RAIN,” a track infused with an electronic swagger they could only accomplish together. It oozes confidence because both artists know exactly who they are and what they bring to the table at this moment in time.
Sonically, this track is exactly what you’d hope to hear from these two creative juggernauts bringing their skills together. BNYX®️’s pointy synths are the perfect accompaniment for Yachty’s signature experimental vocal manipulation. The unpredictability of the production makes the track sound futuristic, which is hilariously contrasted when Yachty shouts out 2000s cartoon icon Static Shock.
Although the track is defined by hectic in its production and lyrical braggadocio, it’s engaging and concise, clocking in at just under two minutes. The accompanying visualizer for the tune contrasts the music in its simplicity. It’s dark, claustrophobic and meticulously curated. Most shots are in two dimly lit rooms with dark walls and minimal decorations, and staying in this minimal visual landscape forces viewers to mindfully observe the space which was created for them.
The collaboration is yet another major step for BNYX®️ and his artistic journey. He recently signed a deal with the rapper Yeat’s Lyfestyle Corporation to ready a debut album that showcases the true breadth of his musical ambitions in one carefully curated piece of art.
BNYX®️will be a force to watch as he enters this stage in his career. His debut album is expected to release in 2025, but listening to “SMOKING IN THE RAIN” is a perfect place to start in the meantime. You can find it wherever you get your music!
