Indie-Folk Newcomer Sarah Michelle Releases Ethereal Love Song “Little Moon”
Dabbling in the intersection of hopeless romanticism and melancholic yearning, Sarah Michelle’s “Little Moon” is an honest expression of what it feels like to be madly in love.
The dreamy ballad debuted on February 22nd, marking Michelle’s second release on major streaming platforms. Written and co-produced by the young indie artist, “Little Moon” is an ode to the highs and lows of desperately holding on to unrequited love. The lyrics, both tender, and heart-wrenching, perfectly encapsulate the arduousness of navigating young love and all of its pitfalls. Michelle paints a vivid image of the trepidation, excitement, and longing that come in tow with being deeply infatuated with a close friend. Endearingly earnest and incredibly bashful, “Little Moon” aims to make your heart swell with the familiar burn of having a crush.
Inspired by the fictional character Luna Lovegood from JK Rowling’s Harry Potter, “Little Moon” was the first song Sarah Michelle had ever written. “As an artist, I’m 100% a storyteller. It’s my favorite thing- I want my songs to speak to people, to be stories that people can relate to and be moved by. And I think that Little Moon tells one of those stories. So many people experience falling in love with someone that they can’t have. and in this case, which makes this song so specific to I think mostly my generation, is that person is a fictional character” says Michelle.
Beginning with simplistic chords tucked under a veil of wistful lyrics, the song progresses slowly -gradually leading into an orchestral harmony of layered vocals and instrumentals. Michelle’s voice bursts with raw emotion and flawlessly complements the rise and fall of the production’s intensity. The soft, subtle opening and its deliberately-slow progression into a blazing climax is a reflection of the rollercoaster of emotions that love can take us on. Within the first 15 seconds, Michelle’s vocal arrangement quickly lulls you into a dream-like state -hungering to experience the same intimacy that she sings so passionately about.
