On May 28th, Sammy Haig released his Cucumber EP into the world. At the beginning of the EP is the track “Dreaming Of,” which is an excellent blend of jazz chords, funky horns, and jam band energy. What started off as a student recital morphed into this full project, and “Dreaming Of” is a perfect showcase of what Haig is good at.
The horn arrangements are phenomenal. The mixing is incredible. The modulations in the bridge are even cooler than the horn arrangements, which I didn’t think was possible. The only qualm I have with this is the use of the organ. I feel like if it was a Rhodes keyboard, it would be a bit funkier or more on the acid jazz spectrum, and I think that would work better. As it stands, though, the song is fantastic.
Furthermore, the vocals on this track are fantastic. The lead performance by Jared Griffin is nearly flawless, and the mixing allows the harmonies at the end to be subdued without being buried. Overall, just a great song from a solid up-and-coming artist. Be sure to check it out and let us know what you think!
