Sabrina Song Contemplates Tough Relationships in Music Video for “Doors”
The Brooklyn-based alt-pop artist has been adding song by song to her discography, creating a universe for herself and her listeners. Sabrina Song takes after her inspirations, Mitski, Lucy Dacus and Carole King, choosing to produce her music and define her own sound.
Among her many impressive tracks, “Doors” demonstrates Song’s ability to balance brutal topics with soft vocals. Throughout the verses, a sense of stillness persists, never completely exploding or quickening in the chorus. Fans would say it’s genius when they realize it perfectly captures the feeling of dissatisfaction in a toxic relationship. Song tells it as is, without the need to shout or scream.
I reference specific moments throughout my life where it feels as though I was letting someone down or being let down myself, yet was still made to feel as though it was my fault.

In the music video, the singer-songwriter relives high school moments with scenes of prom, high school football games or birthday parties. Everything happens in slow-motion as if she’s in her own world. Perhaps that’s what it feels like, being in an unhealthy relationship. There is a sense of frustration and disconnect that is being addressed.
Ditching parties in the daylight
Fighting over FaceTime
Spending every night with my friends
Finding love and then, I lose it
Holding on my feelings in a single frame
– “Doors”
Adolescence is portrayed as a time filled with an odd mix of feelings, both serious to silly. And it is. Everything seems contradictory and fragile, and for Song, too much is determined by that one person. Happy experiences like dancing at prom or eating cake at a party can easily be ruined by that someone. So while there’s love and desire, she conveys that there is strength in walking away and making her decision.
Sabrina Song is what people would definitely call underrated. Catching the attention of big singer-songwriters like Phoebe Bridgers, and opening for Moon Kissed and Sarak Kinsley, the musician is sure to gain many fans.
With her last EP, When It All Comes Crashing Down, released in 2022, followers are patiently awaiting news for her next release. Keep up with Sabrina Song on Instagram and give her music a listen on Spotify.
