“Running Back To You” in a Love That Never Fails

“Running Back To You,” a single released by Ghost Lion in July 2022, is an indie pop track riddled with explosive dynamics and ethereal passages. The song captures the “it’s always darkest before dawn” sense of hope, and its accompanying music video perfectly documents this frantic search as well.

The music of Ghost Lion evokes a nighttime search party for a utopia intended for those fleeing a world seemingly on the edge of detonation. Its subtropical world-pop is emblematic of the South Florida culture where singer/songwriter, composer and producer Blake Hanley grew up.  He unites a variety of music traditions and cultures on his debut album, Nuclear Island, where “Running Back To You” resides.

“There was this dueling tension between who I was and who I longed to be. ‘Ghost Lion’ represents that tension in the duality of our humanity: the shadow self and the true self. Dark and light.”

“Running Back To You” completely embodies a sense a longing both from its intriguing sound and visually stunning music video. Beginning with an echoing atmosphere of a building piano, Hanley reflects on the love he has experienced in his life thus far. Audiences can see that when simulating his final moments, Hanley’s main desire is to remember a love he was once given, a love from a person once held dear, but no longer close due to unknown circumstances. He claims that where this love was first shared was “where it all began,” and that before he takes his final breath, it is the exact place of where he would like to return to his last moments. It can be said that a single like this can encourage feelings of reflection in anyone that allows it to, and if that is desired by you, than I highly encourage a listen.
