After a heartfelt moment while working at an Abercrombie & Fitch, Rue Vega knew she had to write “I Wish You Knew.”

Vega recalls a woman around her mom’s age browsing through clothes when she stopped and said, “Are you sure these will look good? You know, with my—” pointing to her arms and stomach. The moment sat deep with Vega, who said it felt all too familiar.

That moment in the store broke my heart. I immediately wrote down what would become the chorus: ‘I wish you knew how beautiful you are.’ It’s what I wanted to tell that woman, my nana, my mom, and honestly, myself.

She went straight to work on “I Wish You Knew” during a quick bathroom break at work, recording ideas for the chorus on her phone.

The second verse draws from Vega’s Nana’s stories, which she values far more than her physical appearance: “She has lived such a rich life, full of so much love and joy, and that is what matters about her. I want to be fulfilled in that way, and it starts with acknowledging what’s really important. Physical appearance is at the bottom of the list.” Beauty is bigger than our bodies, and we’re way harder on ourselves than we are on those we love.

This kind of societal standard cuts deep for young people everywhere, worrying they are never enough, no matter how beautiful their loved ones find them. For Vega, now 20, she finds herself reliving adolescent insecurities of acne and weight.

The piano ballad confronts generational insecurities, impossible beauty standards, and body image. In “I Wish You Knew,” lyrics straight from the heart are accompanied by cinematic piano that builds to a sweeping crescendo, complete with strings for a sentimental symphonic feel—with a powerhouse vocal performance to match.

I’m not interested in being the cool girl. My music is for the outsiders—the ones spending weekends alone instead of at parties, dealing with unrequited crushes and the impossible beauty standard.

Vega’s personal strength is threaded through her music. After coping with health complications in 2022, Vega has navigated chronic illness, an emotionally abusive relationship, and major life changes.
