Life has a tendency to move pretty quickly, especially if we’re not careful to slow it down by taking time to appreciate the moments that make up each and every day. Australian singer/songwriter Rod Coote pens a timely, and relevant, reminder that focuses exactly on that – connecting with life, taking deep breaths, and unwinding as a result in order to fully appreciate what life can be.

While still in the early days of his career, Rod has already established his dreamy and atmospheric indie folk-pop sound by blending the strings of an acoustic guitar with layers of vocal harmonies, relatable heartfelt lyrics, and slick production. Following the success of his recent releases, “Wild Pine” and “East To Love,” Rod’s music has received national airplay on Triple J in his homeland of Australia, featured on Alexrainbird‘s YouTube channel playlists, and recently signed with European and North American based record label, Two Key Records.

After spending most of his youth growing up int he rural countryside of Australia, Rod’s move to the coast proved transformative and heavily influenced his signature style of songwriting. The independent singer/songwriter’s music career is only going up with new music scheduled to release sequentially throughout 2021, produced by award-winning producer and Canadian folk artist Garrett Kato, who has previously produced music for similar artists such as Riley Pearce, Jack Botts, Angus & Julia Stone, and many more.

His atmospheric, uplifitng indie folk-pop single “Unwind” is the latest in his cataloge of music which encapsulates a range of different moods and tempos, creating the perfect soundscapes for coastal road trips, summer days at the beach, cozy rain days, or bush walks through dense, evergreen forest. “Unwind” was written out of a need for Rod to express overwhelming emotions. He further shares,

This song was carthartically written at the end of 2020 when I was feeling slightly overwhelmed with the world and also struggling mentally for a short period of time. During that summer, I had just moved to the coast and through slowly immersing myself in nature again and spending time with friends/family, I started to feel connected with the world again and the people around me, feeling more like myself. The coastal environment also heavily inspired the lyrics of this song. I wanted this to be an uplifting song for others to connect with, as a reminder to take a breathe and relieve your daily stresses. During the bridge of the song you can hear subtly voices speaking as if they are having a conversation. This is actually from a video recording I’d captured of while eating breakfast with my family. I felt like it captured a time when I was truly in the present moment, enjoying their company and ‘Unwind’ing by spending time with them.

Filled with tasteful vocal vibrados, cheerful guitar strums, and heartwarming lyrics, “Unwind” provides a calm escape for listeners who might feel like the world is a bit too heavy for them right now or that life is moving too quickly. Behind Rod’s vocals, which strike a unique balance between soothing and roaring, lays a tranquil soundscape that beckons relaxation, even if just for a short couple of minutes. The song serves as a pleasant reminder to us all, especially following two years that have been anything but ordinary, that life is worth slowing down for.
