The San-Franciscan indie trio, Hot Flash Heat Wave, has just shared their music video for their single “m o t i o n s.” The single follows last year’s EP MOON RING, where the band was fully able to let go and experiment with finding their synthesizing aesthetic. Just like the gap between each letter of the track’s title, the video for “ m o t i o n s” creates a visual journey of fluid movement as the trio takes a trip from the lights of an LA city night to the dreamy daze of the Southern California landscape.
The band’s members include Adam Abildgaard, Nick Duffy, and Ted Davis. All three have known each other since high school and have been establishing a loyal fanbase with their sonic sounds since the group’s formation in 2010. With the single, the group has blended the retro synthesizing instrumentals of the 80s with a contemporary melody. The soothing vocals create a sense of dreamlike nostalgia as they transport you to those summer days that seem to just last forever.
The video elevates the escapist quality of the track as the soft hues of pink and blue keep a constant sense of flowing movement that is not rushed, just felt. There is a great sense of relaxed intimacy amongst the trio as they are freely “going through the motions.” The video ends with them on the beach as the ocean waves wash over, symbolizing a peaceful cleansing.
On the video the band notes,
“This video is a juxtaposition of movement and emotion. It’s a non-linear journey across barren lands and cityscapes paired with abstracted vignettes that hint towards a deeper meaning of longing and allow the viewer to craft their own meaning behind the lyrics of the song.”
