Some of 2024’s most unlikely music news has come from a new rap collaboration between country music icon Dolly Parton and internationally-acclaimed rapper Pitbull, otherwise known as “Mr. Worldwide.”

The unexpected power duo made headlines in February with the release of “Powerful Women,” a single that features both vocal artists and also samples Parton’s famous “9 to 5” from 1980. Following Parton’s most recent album, “Rockstar,” released in November, as well as Pitbull’s February album “Trackhouse (Daytona 500 Edition),” both artists used their time in the spotlight to make waves with their shared track, featured as the fifth track on Pitbull’s seven-track collection.

Two weeks after the epic release, Pitbull went to social media to write a short yet heartfelt message to Parton, saying “It’s an honor to be collaborating with one of music’s most powerful women, gracias @dollyparton! Dale!” In the same post, the Florida-based rapper attached a cheerful photo of himself alongside the legendary septuagenarian.

With endearing lyrics expressing his gratitude for the women in his life, Pitbull dedicates his song to “All my powerful women / Workin’ nine to five / Two, three jobs just to survive.”

Knowing Parton’s strong drive to use her fame and platform for activism and community causes, it’s no surprise that she decided to collaborate with Pitbull on this track that uplifts and celebrates hardworking women like herself. The singer-songwriter affectionately dubbed “the Queen of Country” has had a career spanning nearly 70 years, all while paving the way for other female country musicians to thrive.

“All my powerful women, no man at home / Raisin’ all the kids alone / All my powerful women, y’all deserve a throne / Keep your head up and stay strong / All my powerful women, no matter what / Never give up”

Pitbull likewise began his career in early adulthood and hasn’t looked back since. Billboard ranked the pop-rap superstar as the 24th Top Latin Artist of the 2010s as well as the 45th Top Artist of the 2010s overall — both legendary feats considering the sheer amount of musical talent that exists in the United States alone.

To take a deeper dive, what makes both of these artists so beloved and respected today is the fact that they were both born in adversity and overcame numerous hardships to become the household names they are today. Pitbull grew up in a single-parent household with his mother, a Cuban immigrant, and lived in foster care for a period of his childhood. Parton, in a similar vein, grew up in poverty with 11 siblings to farmer parents in the South. However, rather than letting their struggles define them, both artists have instead used their humble backgrounds as fodder to rise to greatness.

To celebrate the wonderful power of women even past Women’s History Month in March, check out Dolly Parton’s album “Rockstar,” as well as Pitbull’s album “Trackhouse (Daytona 500 Edition),” without which the brilliant “Powerful Women” would not have been brought to fruition.
