Poppy Ajudha’s Newest Single “NO!” Is Here To Empower Those Who Need It Most
London-based musician Poppy Ajudha has no problem speaking out on social issues and the exploration of identity through her music. As a biracial, LGBTQ+ woman of color, Ajudha showcased her ability to weave personal experiences with her identity with social commentary through her debut album, The Power In Us earlier this year. Now Ajudha is back with her new single, “NO!” produced with Jungle.
“NO!” is a song full of empowerment and melodies that make the track sound like it belongs in an action movie where the listener is the star. Its guitar riffs and percussion feed into the high-energy feel, making the listener want to take action in whatever way they can. The song’s lyrics embody a message of figuring out one’s life purpose, even if no one else understands. The chorus emphasizes this message through the lyrics, “Am I still runnin’?/ Is it too late/ To see the changes/ That I know I need to make?/ Time to wake up (Wake up)/ In this bed I made/ They call me crazy/ To find my fate.”

According to Ajudha, “NO!” means that,
“In a world where anyone can reach you at any time, and say whatever they want through a computer screen, ‘NO!’ Is a rebellion against the criticism and internet trolling, a social commentary on a world of chaotic political narratives, dishonest public figures and the ongoing flow of conflicting public opinions. The track is about owning who you are, being unapologetically yourself, and saying NO! to other people’s expectations of you. I wrote ‘NO!’ with Jungle on our first time meeting, our energies just clicked and we created the perfect rebellious and urgent record that speaks to how I feel in this moment.”
Along with the drop of the new single is a music video full of highly color-saturated scenes following Poppy Ajudha as she races through the streets in a white crop top and bright red pants. Directed by David Hayes, the viewers watch as she runs into a group of men dressed in white and another woman taking photos of her, but seems to ignore them as she continues racing through the street. The music video’s focus on Ajudha running personifies the running that is constantly referenced in the song’s lyrics.
