Perfume Genius Announces New Album ‘Ugly Season’ Out June 17

Out of all the words in the dictionary, “genius” possesses one of the most interesting etymological journeys out there. Born out of the Latin word “gignere” meaning ‘beget’. Overtime particularly the late 16 century, it evolved to the word “genius”. This time carrying an eerier meaning “attendant spirit present from one’s birth, innate ability or inclination” (excuse me what?!). Mid-17th century rolled along, and it once again changed this time to the one we’re familiar with “exceptional intellectual or creative power or other natural ability”. Now talk about an evolution!

While we’re here figuratively blowing minds to smithereens, let’s talk about another form of genius. This time in person of musician extraordinaire Perfume Genius. Who has been capturing the world by storm with immense talent and heart. Not to mention that flare and intense emotions in every performance.

Ever the showman, this upcoming June 17th, he offers us something that for sure will mesmerize and open our eyes. Entitled “Ugly Season”, this gem is brought to you via Matador Records. Which you can preorder here. As for its contents. This wonderland of eargasmic tunes boasts of 10 tracks that will for sure do your body right. It includes the following: “Just A Room”, “Herem”, “Teeth”, “Pop Song”, “Scherzo”, “Ugly Season”, “Eye in The Wall”, “Photograph”, “Hellbent” and “Cenote”.

Coupled with this impending album release, is a short film in collaboration with renowned visual artist Jacolby Satterwhite. Little is still known about the details of the project, rest assured that it will be one for the ages if not iconic. How so? Given Satterwhite’s prowess on immersive multidisciplinary techniques fusing live video, 3D animation, drawing and printmaking which have appeared in MoMa. Perfume Genius’s enticing lyrics, beats and unique perspective on this planet we call earth. We could fully say that this is a can’t miss film as early as now.

Circling back to the album itself “Ugly Season” isn’t something to take lightly. As much as it is a collection of pieces to move to, it’s much more than that. Written as the accompaniment to Perfume Genius and choreographer Kate Wallich’s jaw dropping dance piece “The Sun Still Burns Here.”. This is a living and breathing art piece that we could all take part in. Dancers aren’t included here, instead we could stand in for them and sway our bodies every which way the music flows.

All the energy and buzz surrounding the album and short film is too much to handle. It’s hotter than the sun! Scorching even and that’s truly exciting for us music fans who are in desperate need for something different. But like every masterpiece, it takes time to grow and that’s fine. Till it’s final release, we can enjoy Perfume Genius’ live performances in the following dates and venues:

4/05/22 – Royale – Boston, MA

4/06/22 – Gateway City Arts – Holyoke, MA

4/07/22 – Beacon Theatre – New York, NY
