Olivia Rodrigo‘s sophomore album GUTS continues to deepen our glimpse into her deep and multifaceted inner world. With The New York Times dubbing her “a songwriter of rather astonishing quality” and Rolling Stone calling the album “an instant classic,” Rodrigo has no doubt risen to superstardom. “Vampire,” the lead single of the album immediately turned into her biggest debut yet across all major streaming platforms. Furthermore, it ranked no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 to where it returned when GUTS debuted. This made her the youngest artist in Hot 100 history to debut three hits at no. 1, with “drivers license” and “good 4 u” alongside “vampire.”
While GUTS sees Rodrigo reuniting with SOUR producer Daniel Nigro, her writing style has grown to be much more introspective. Still featuring beloved feelgood songs, the album encapsulates her emotional truths, as well as a bittersweet coming of age flair.
About the album Rodrigo says,
“I feel like I grew 10 years between the ages of 18 and 20 – it’s such an intense period of awkwardness and change. I definitely made a lot of mistakes during that time, but that’s how I started to learn how to do things right. I think that’s all just a natural part of growth, and hopefully the album reflects that.”

GUTS is a testament of Rodrigo’s remarkable growth as a singer-songwriter. Using supernatural elements such as the vampire as a metaphor she masterfully tells a story of toxic romance.
She further states,
“I was upset about a certain situation and went to the studio and sat down at the grand piano, and the chords and melody and lyrics just poured out of me – almost like an out-of-body experience.”

Another masterpiece of songwriting is the amazing track “bad idea right?” The song tells the tale of how love and obsession shapes and twists our perception of reality.
“‘bad idea right?’ started with us making a joke song about me hooking up with an ex-boyfriend, but then we realized we were actually onto something. We were throwing the weirdest things at the wall in one of the choruses there’s a part that sounds like an instrument in the background, but it’s me gradually screaming louder and louder.”

“Logical,” on the other hand, takes a more bittersweet and calm track. It deals with the regrets that giving in to your heart sometimes entail.
“I was talking to my best friend and she said the words ‘love’s just not logical,’ which triggered that song idea for me. As we were working on it, I wanted to lean into a country kind of feel – I was really inspired by country songwriters and how they’re able to express emotion in a way that’s clear and concise but so beautiful at the same time.”

“All-american bitch” might just be the most impressive moment on the album. Rodrigo raises awareness for larger issues in the cultural psyche through the lens of her own experiences. Embodying the loud-quiet-loud dynamic of classic alt-rock, the song represents the female struggle with emotions and societal norms.
“I have been thinking about the idea of performance and what’s expected of me as a woman. It’s something I’ve struggled with for a while: dealing with uncomfortable feelings like anger and rage, and then trying to suppress them because of this subconscious bias about how girls and women are supposed to carry themselves.”
