Okay Kaya Releases Hypnotic Video for “Inside of a Plum”
Indie musician Okay Kaya released the music video for her song, “Inside of a Plum” on Oct.17. The song is from her newest album, SAP which was released recently at the start of the month. “Inside of a Plum” is a song inspired by the musician’s recent ketamine therapy and is a serene depiction of that experience.
Okay Kaya whose real name is Kaya Wilkins is a Norwegian-American musician and actress from New Jersey. Her musical influences include the likes of Nick Drake, The Velvet Underground and PJ Harvey. Following entering the music scene in 2015, Okay Kaya has released several albums that deal with heartbreak, rejection and loss. Her soft angelic vocals have provided the backbone to intensely emotional songs that have left many on the verge of tears.
On “Inside of a Plum” Okay Kaya attempts to describe the process of going through ketamine therapy. The song is hypnotic and trancelike in its tranquility. The words are spread out, with Wilkins vocals having a slight layering to them. Okay Kaya talks about drifting way, as if she’s “scuba diving in space”. Everything seems far off, a lot of life’s anxieties now at a distance.
“The doctor said ketamine treatment could interrupt behavioral patterns by growing new literal physical branches in your brain, providing cognitive flexibility”
The music video was made with DALL·E 2 with visual artist Austin Lee. DAAL E 2 is an AI that creates art based on given input from people such as a written description. For “Inside of a Plum”, Lee and Wilikins provided the AI with visual images. The AI results were then used to make the video. The video is just as trippy as the song in itself with broad colours, abstract themes and dark and broody moods. The images present include lollipops, sunsets and general abstract art.
