Now Ex Laments “Where Did All The People Go” in Chamber Pop Single
In a world where so many of us seem to be ruled by a screen – browsing social media, reading the news, scrolling through videos, and watching the endless entertainment flash by – Now Ex pens a melancholic reflection on the power of the internet and those we’ve lost to it along the way. “Where Did All The People Go” reminds us that while we may try to find ourselves through a screen, we need to look up on occassion to breathe and take in what’s immediately in front of us.
Now Ex is the musical pseudonym of singer-songwriter and film director Nick Hampson. Nick started the project as both an outlet for his songwriting as well as a vehicle for creating music for his own upcoming feature film and TV projects, the most recent of which was nominated for an Emmy award in 2021. Now Ex has an innately distinct cinematic quality to his sound. His background as a classically trained instrumentalist and opera singer, as well as his raw and poetic lyrics, all combine perfectly with the unique visual side of the project.
“Where Did All The People Go,” the lead track and name sake of Now Ex’s newest EP, builds on the growing momentum that Nick has experienced since his first release in 2020. Addressed to the person you love in your passenger seat, this almost operatic piano ballad grounds listeners in evocative and passionate musings. Now Ex contemplates on how easy it is for us to lose track of who we really are in the frenzy of the internet, where we can so easily be swept up in all of the characters and stories because even though the internet helps us find connection, we can also be surrounded by silence. He admits that he’s been struggling with feeling overwhelmed as the piano keys crash behind his vocals…but he finds peacefulness when he looks at what’s directly in front of him.
