New Music Friday brings a strong feminine perspective this week. Learn something new, or discover a relatable story:

1. Nao: “Light Years”

Indie R&B artist Nao returns with a friends-to-lovers story in her new single, “Light Years.” Though it is an emotionally impactful track, her light and unique vocal tone removes some of the weight and adds a sense of hope. The visualizer’s breezy, colorful imagery matches the dreamy acoustic guitar that leads through the verses.

2. Winona Oak: “It’s Not My Fault”

Swedish singer-songwriter Winona Oak empowers herself by releasing a traumatic past with “It’s Not My Fault.” She authentically retraces the thought processes of many abuse victims, wishing she knew not to blame herself for things out of her control. The near-acappella production highlights the vulnerability of her powerful affirmations.

3. Amira Elfeky: “Death of Me”

LA-based rocker Amira Elfeky explores raw, volatile feelings in “Death Of Me.” Her vocal character is strong, with timely cracks and whines punctuating each verse with heartbreak. The chorus introduces layers of pop-rock guitar riffs, supporting her desperate belts for intertwined romance: “You are the breath I breathe / Take me to eternity.”

4. DeathbyRomy: “LA LA LAND”

DeathbyRomy is tired of “fake friends and fake numbers” in her new grungey track, “LA LA LAND.” She offers a simple yet scathing commentary on the “dog eat dog” and “god eat god” underworld of Los Angeles, pointing out the lengths some people go to just to be there. The noisy chorus intimidates the listener into heeding her warning.

5. Biig Piig: “9-5”

Irish singer Biig Piig embodies young lust and love in her new single, “9-5.” When in love, there is seemingly no such thing as staying up too late or traveling too far for someone. She softly confesses this devotion over a funky indie-pop beat, likening her crush to a full-time job. Heavy reverb on the vocals adds to the floaty atmosphere.
