Funky Montreal-based label Noir Fever has recently debuted with “La Fédération Internationale du Bruit,” a mixtape release from Moonshine, an eclectic musical artist collective founded in 2014 lauded for its innovative dance music creations.

While Moonshine is not new to the deep-cut dance music scene, Noir Fever certainly is. Founded less than six months ago back in November, the label was officially kickstarted by Aluna, a British American singer-songwriter, producer and DJ who longed for an affinity space for Black musical creatives to thrive. In particular, Noir Fever as a label aims to highlight and uplift LGBTQIA+ and Black women artists within the dance genre as those who have been historically underrepresented in dance music.

In an Instagram announcement of the label in early November, Aluna wrote that the founding of Noir Fever came to be because of a mission to “feed the future of Black Dance music.” Thus, the faith and inspiration behind Noir Fever was born from a letter that Aluna wrote in 2020 protesting the persisting inequalities in the dance music industry. Frustrated from a lack of change and desire to uplift underrepresented voices, Aluna set out to do exactly what she hoped to see as a young Black woman navigating the musical niche.

“Every time I found myself on one of those dry outdated festival line ups or playlists with no other Black women I’d ask myself ‘what would have to change for this to not happen again?’…’How can I create a sustainable pathway and not just another opportunity for tokenism?’ It was obvious to me that a label would give me the opportunity to do that and ultimately ensure the hottest new Black Dance music is being supported.”

As a solo artist, Aluna has racked up over 4 million listeners on Spotify to date, with her top hits amassing hundreds of millions of streams. Her solo debut came about in 2020 after breaking from exclusively performing under AlunaGeorge, the chart-topping, electronic music duo she remains part of alongside producer George Reid. Since diving deeper into her individual voice and artistry, Aluna has released two studio albums, the first being 2020’s “Renaissance,” and the second being “MYCELiUM,” a nature-inspired project released last July.

With the release of “La Fédération Internationale du Bruit,” Aluna joins the Moonshine collective alongside artists like Amaal Nuux, Pierre Kwenders and Uproot Andy. The new mixtape boasts no less than 14 different dance artists, all of whom range greatly in style, artistic discipline and popularity, but all of whom nonetheless foster an inviting, collaborative energy that cohesively wraps the album together.

While fans anxiously await the next Noir Fever releases to dance the night away to, Moonshine’s newest album can be streamed here. Additionally, Aluna’s website and her socials may have more to reveal in terms of what to look forward to from the future of her solo career, as well as the future of her trailblazing label, Noir Fever.
