MAKE SOME ROOM OUTSIDE LANDS: THERE’S A NEW FESTIVAL COMING TO THE BAY
The first ever Portola Music Festival is taking place on September 24th and 25th at San Francisco’s Pier 80. Tickets went on sale just about a month ago, but you can still snag your weekend and day passes here. And you better do it fast because Portola is going all out for its inaugural weekend. With a lineup starring the likes of Flume, The Chemical Brothers, Katrynada, James Blake, and Yves Tumor, the new kid on the music festival scene has officially come to play.
Other acts on the Portola Music Festival lineup are Jamie xx, Lane 8, Four Tet + Floating Points, Toro Y Moi, Jungle, Charli XCX, Caroline Polachek, The Avalanches, Caribou, Arca, PinkPantheress, Omar Apollo, Yaeji, Fatboy Slim, Channel Tres, Slowthai, DJ Shadow, Kelly Lee Owens, Shygirl, The Range, and many more. Portola is presented by Goldenvoice and is the brainchild of the company’s VP Talent Buyer Danny Bell. The new festival aims to incorporate all different corners of the dance, indie, hip-hop, and progressive pop realm.
This is the festival I’ve wanted to produce for the past decade. San Francisco is the perfect city for it and now is the perfect time! Let’s dance and have a great time this September!

While the West Coast, summer, and a big ole plot of land is really the only excuse you need to put on a music festival, Portola’s origin story goes deeper than just good Cali vibes––those too, of course. The festival’s namesake is an ode to the Portola Festival of 1909, a celebration of the re-opening of San Francisco three years after the devastating earthquake of 1906. The original Portola Festival was meant to publicize to the world that San Francisco was open and ready to welcome tourists back through its golden gates.
In similar fashion, Danny Bell and Goldenvoice have seized upon an equally historical moment to reinvigorate the Portola Festival name. As summer 2022 pours over the United States, the nation is seeing folks come out of their homes, gather at restaurants, attend concerts, and finally get back to living and celebrating socially. The Portola Music Festival is yet another expression of this colossal reopening, proclaiming to the world that San Francisco has bounced back once again.
