Juliet Simms, a regular performer of the Vans Warped Tour and finalist of The Voice in 2011, took over Sumerian Records’s Instagram to chat with fans about life in quarantine and her world of music, movies, and her upcoming album.
After facing technical difficulties, Juliet persisted through and ensured that she would spend quality time answering questions with everyone that joined her.
Here are some of the questions she answered while live:
- How is life in quarantine going?
- Life in quarantine has had both its good days and bad days, I am finally able to organize my life and my house, and Andy (her husband) and I are spending a lot of time together. I’m just trying to get things done, so that when I go to bed at night, I don’t feel awful.
- What is the best and the worst thing about being a singer?
- The best thing is also the worst thing; I have found. It’s amazing to be able to have my body as an instrument, but it is a fragile thing, and is always going through a lot.
- Another great thing is being onstage, in the front. It’s like therapy while I’m singing and being able to emote what I’m feeling and translate it to the audience.
- How do you deal with hate, and people making assumptions and spreading rumors?
- First, know and be confident in who you really are
- Second, the person giving you hate is most likely going through a lot, they’re unhappy, or they’re insecure.
- Third, do not give them the satisfaction of reacting the way they expect you to.
- What music did you grow up listening to?
- Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, David Bowie, the Beatles, and more. Think anything 60’s-80’s hippie rock and pop.
- What is your favorite thing to bring on tour?
- Clothing, food, and cell phone aside, my vocal bag. If you’re ever having any issues with your voice, “Mama JuJu” has got you covered, with losenges, teas, cough drops, and allergy medicines. I love my vocal bag.
- What is your favorite song to play live?
- “Hundred Little Deaths,” “Take Me,” and all the new songs on the upcoming record when I can finally get to play them!
- What inspires you creatively?
- There is no “one” thing. You will find that many creatives will tell you that. For me it’s not only life experiences, good and bad, but television, movies, and music.
- What inspired you to be who you are in life?
- It was a moment when I was little that I still remember very vividly; one night, when I was having trouble sleeping, my mother came in my room and noticed I was very sad. “Why are you sad?” she asked. “I want to help all of the people in the world,” I replied. I knew even before then that I wanted to be a singer, but eventually found that I can use my voice as a tool to help others.
- How does it feel when people tell you that you helped save their life?
- I’ve been through some really dark stuff in my life, but I would not have become the person I am without it. I have learned to wear all of my life experiences like a badge of honor, like, “I am strong; I have made it through this…”
- No one’s life is perfect. If you’re going through a hard time, look at it as a learning experience. You can make it through those tough times, and then look back at it and see just how strong you are.
- Being told that I helped someone go through a hard time is all I could ask for. It goes back to that moment when I was a little girl, and what I said to my mom came true.
Juliet is performing in a role for upcoming television series, Paradise City, the sequel to the movie American Satan. Cast members include Andy Biersack of Black Veil Brides, Bella Thorne, the late Cameron Boyce, and more. The release date is yet to be set. Juliet said that life on set was super fun, thanks to the directors and producers of the show. The environment was productive, but relaxed and easy, and she loved playing a character that seemed to be made for her.
A new album is in the works. Just a few songs from being finished, she is excited to get it out and released into the world. Due to the pandemic, the album has not been completed yet, but “it is so close,” and she is eager to get back to work and finish it. She has an inkling of what her first single will be: her anthem of female empowerment, but it may be too soon to say whether that song will be the first or not. “The album is everything I have ever wanted to be, and what I have wanted to say. It has been amazing to be with a new label who wants to help me grow and spread my wings.”
