Liam Moore’s “Doctor” is an experimental rock song for the struggles of an insomniac

Rhythmic and expansive, guitar strings are plucked across registers in the introduction to Liam Moore’s newest track “Doctor.” It’s an experimental edge to a rock riff, making the song instantly new and enticing right off of the first listen. In a momentary dramatic pause, Moore jumps in with a charmingly lackadaisical vocal line as he begins to ask his doctor for the reasons why he can’t sleep. The line is fitting considering Moore wrote the song after suffering from several sleepless nights of anxiety-induced insomnia.

It’s hard to pin down a genre for this track because as Moore and many other artists have said, “genre is a spectrum,” and he taps into many across this track, but it rests somewhere between alternative rock and experimental psychedelia. The melody of “Doctor” is catchy yet unexpected too, probably because Moore “wants the songs stuck in his had to get stuck in yours.” As the upbeat finger-picking continues, Moore sings on of watching the clock, his words becoming more entangled in a complex web of drums, electric guitar, saxophone, and other fantastical, dreamlike elements. As they come together, the track builds in intensity, reflecting a feeling of mounting anxiety as the night wears on, the clock endlessly ticking, while you lay there helplessly awake.

Liam Moore is a Saint Paul, Minnesota-based artist. and this is the second single coming ahead of the release of his upcoming album Only Forward, the third of his discography of complete projects. The album will follow his 2020 release Visions of a Perfect Life, an avant-garde album rooted in the singer-songwriter genre. In between his personal projects, Moore also composes music for choirs and chamber ensembles.

The experimental artist first started releasing his music in 2010 with the inaugural album Solo Duets for Voice and Guitar. Although much has changed since then, there are no signs of Moore slowing down in his musical exploration. Keep up with Moore on other platforms and listen to “Doctor” below!
