Nothing is as easy as it looks.

While fans patiently await their Coachella debut this April, the confident and honest K-pop girl group LE SSERAFIM returned with a cool attitude for “EASY. This title track of their new EP continues the group’s signature story of fearlessness, commenting on the expectations they face as idols and self-confidence. “EASY” is a chill trap-based song that intrigued fans as it uncovered a new musical side of LE SSERAFIM.

A catchy, cartoonish recorder loop opens the song and repeats throughout. It is most quiet during the echo-y, spacey pre-chorus which offers a welcome textural switch-up from the rest of the track. “EASY” is in fact easy to listen to, with a bopping and upbeat melody that anybody can jam to. But, the lyrics describe some of LE SSERAFIM’s hardships as people in the public eye. This contrast is a genius way to exemplify the song’s meaning. In the first verse, members Huh Yunjin and Sakura say:

The lights go out and I wander in the night

Don’t know what is right, don’t know ‘bout my rights

Jealousy, doubt, mistrust, now friends of me

To the world, I’m halfway seraphim

LE SSERAFIM, “EASY”

The accompanying music video is colorful and serves up thought-provoking imagery and camera angles that match the lyrics.

The members can be seen walking into a church with a confident strut; not the first place you would expect to see a trendy girl group dancing. But the homonyms “SSERAFIM” and “seraphim” suggest that they belong to an ethereal, heavenly realm. The group appears to be smartly poking at this expectation placed upon idols. This floaty imagery continues with the use of veil-like curtains, floral-decorated swings, and stunning pair shots of members that look straight out of classical paintings.

LE SSERAFIM continues to pave its path in the busy world of K-pop and girl groups. Their message and concept have connected with thousands of people, as the group is set to take on their first big festival stage and who knows, hopefully, a tour, this year.
