KAY FLOCK & FIVIO FOREIGN “MAKE A MOVIE” —DRILL STARS UNITE
Movies no matter what genre they may be holds a special place in all our hearts. They’ve helped shape and awaken our senses, en route to becoming the people who we are today. From Louis Le Prince’s “Roundhay Garden Scene”, Martin Scorsese’s “Casino”, Steven Spielberg’s “Jurassic Park”, Bong Joon-Ho’s “Parasite” and list goes on, they’ve all left us that indelible mark. One that we will continue to carry till our final breaths on this crazy planet we call earth. It’s that reminder that no matter how you cut it, movies are an extension of who we are. They’re stories about our condition, our dreams, struggles, and of course our triumphs.
In that same line of thinking, we could also apply that to Kay Flock and Fivio Foreign’s new song called “Make A Movie” that was released last June 17th. A rap track that tackles the brotherhood and tight bond these drill stars have journeying together in the drill scene in the big apple. It’s a feel-good tale that illustrates that despite the hardships life has thrown at them. With their hard work and sheer perseverance, they’ve risen above it all (even the haters) and managed to create their kingdom where they rule side by side. All of which also displayed in the documentary “The Kay Flock Story” which can be viewed in the trailer here.
Looking at the song in a deeper manner, this one gives us that stunning first-person account of what it’s like to walk in Kay and Flavio’s shoes with hard hitting lines such as “GBG, we been slidin’ for weeks (Skrrt). Walk down gang, face shot, no V (Baow). And b****, is you ridin’ for me?”. Tough as this may sound, it’s a sneak peek about the realities they woke up to. A reminder that poverty isn’t a bogey man that grabs your feet from under, it’s a boxer that wallops you with uppercuts. Now it’s up to you to make the decision of giving up or standing firm just like what they did.
As for the accompanying MV, it’s tough as nails like the tune itself laced with cinematography comparable to that of a movie which is very fitting. Another element we should consider are the scenes shown which flips from flashback to present day. Offering a stark contrast of how it was before and now. It signals that without the trials and tribulations, the good life wouldn’t be achieved. As cheesy as this may all sound, the fortunes they get to enjoy now taste sweeter because of the bitter pills they had to swallow then.
As much as it is their own flick, we could also say that Kay Flock and Fivio Foreign’s “Make A Movie” is ours as well. We too undergo tribulations, and as much as it tries to whoop our behinds on the regular. We’re all still here fighting that good fight for a chance at greener pastures. That in itself is enough reason for all of us to keep on grinding, and give these drill stars that admiration they’ve yearned. Hopefully as we listen to what they have to say, we can learn from their example and use their words to fuel our own films so that we could be in the spotlight too.
