Katie Boeck’s Emotional New Release “Bittersweet”
Love and relationships are full of an array of emotions, whether it’s happiness, sadness, or even bittersweetness. In Katie Boeck’s latest single, “Bittersweet,” the singer-songwriter explores what it is like to long for someone before eventually learning to let them go.
Listen to “Bittersweet” below:
“Bittersweet” is a soft and gentle record, perfectly complementing the vulnerability of Boeck’s evocative vocal performance. The song begins with what sounds like glass breaking before the acoustic guitar and Boeck’s vocals come in. Although the guitar and vocals are the song’s main focus, they are accompanied by harmonies and the keyboard, elevating the track’s heartbreak expression.
Combined with the more understated instrumental, the lyrics of “Bittersweet” capture the back and forth that comes into play when trying to get over someone. The song starts with a strong image of “I let my guard come down/ I thought the war was won,” as Boeck describes how vulnerable she was with this person. Boeck further delves into this vulnerability in the chorus as she sings, “At least I know I tried my best/ To mean what I say/ Say what I mean,” especially as she reveals that it didn’t seem to line up with what the other person wanted. This revelation closes the chorus, “Of all the things that love can be/ With you it’s only bittersweet.”
No matter how good the memories are, they will always be tinged with sadness when thinking about what could have been, but also what wasn’t there, the missing piece of the puzzle; both people being on the same page and loving in the way they deserve.
On those late nights, when thinking about a relationship that never was or is drowning in heartbreak, “Bittersweet” provides comfort and validation with its gentle approach to expressing a complex pain.
