Julia Bhatt and What it Means to be the “Fighting Type”

“Fighting Type,” out in tandem with the release of Julia Bhatt’s debut album it is what it is,  showcasing her gen-Z genre-fluid talent. When the pandemic hit in 2020, Bhatt started to compose songs on music creation software, Ableton Live, rather than on the guitar. The first music to come from this new approach to making music were her 2021 singles “1:30” and “Hair Salon Vibes,” both of which were included in her newest album. “Fighting Type” was also one of the first songs she composed in this new way of creating music, and here she speaks of the frustrations that being a new artist in the industry entails.

“I wrote ‘Fighting Type’ about social media. I have to promote shit all the time on TikTok and Instagram and I have to watch numbers rise and fall, and it’s just brutal. That’s the music industry now, so I have to adapt. This was a product of that.”

Bhatt’s new music style is immediately shown right at the beginning of “Fighting Type.” Introduced with a dancing keyboard, the lyrics jump in and express their wonderings, asking if everything is a game, and if this game sets itself up for you to fail or succeed. It speaks on the fragility of being an online personality, how everything could be taken from you in an instant if people desired it, and if such a path like this is the right one to follow at all. Then again, the question exists that if is anyone actually noticing at all, due to them also having to watch every single number rise and fall. Overall, the quick beat of the single provides for an incredibly catchy sound, and Bhatt’s vocals and message fit perfectly due to its uniqueness.
