Jei-Rynn Disassociates by “sleeping (all day)” in Dark yet Upbeat Release

Join Jei-Rynn as he ruminates on escapism and emotional disassociation in his recent single, “sleeping (all day),” which is the first release of his forthcoming EP overreacting, due out on October 21. This dark but upbeat alternative pop-rock track with shades of hip-hop is a catchy anthem for those of us out there who find solace in sleep and would rather spend our days in bed than deal with life and reality.

Based in and native to southern California, Jei-Rynn began writing his own songs from the early age of 12. His art and songwriting have always been an oasis and outlet, giving way to a style that has been described as “journal entries.” His music is evocative of familiar alternative artists like Nirvana and more modern alternative acts like Yungblud and Twenty One Pilots, but his sound is also singular and new – it’s the voice of a misfit, outsider music in a pop-friendly package.

After playing in bands for years, Jei-Rynn decided to pursue his solo project at the heels of the pandemic and civil unrest at the turn of the decade. Using guitar hooks reminiscent of grunge and 2000’s emo rock, as well as 808s and programmed beats akin to the era of Billie Eilish, Jei-Rynn is a multi-ethnic, multi-genre, multi-instrumental artist that is a voice to be reckoned with.

“sleeping (all day)” explores the effects of past damage on the present, as well as the fragility of identity. The inception of the song came with the vocal melody of the chorus while Jei-Rynn was, fittingly, in a state of semi-sleep. The track was produced by Alex Arias (The Mowgli’s, Matchbox Twenty) and mixed and mastered by ZK Productions (Mayday Parade, All Time Low). Paying homage to what spurred the start of his project, Jei-Rynn explores themes of post-pandemic America, depression and identity, and the complexity of relationships through his songs. In “sleeping (all day)”, he explores disconnecting from life in a very sonically accessible manner. The pop leanings of the track create a fun bounce that lulls listeners into forgetting just what the topic of the song is. You may even find yourself singing along to the chorus, which is more sinister than you may expect from the soundscape. Beyond the focus on escapism, Jei-Rynn also includes snippets of other dark topics that are pervasive in our modern-day society.
