Interscope Geffen A&M Records recently launched an exciting and groundbreaking initiative that deepens its connection with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This campaign celebrates the rich history of HBCUs and emphasizes their undeniable impact on music culture. The program is a multi-faceted effort designed to support these prestigious institutions, some of which have played an essential role in shaping the careers of Interscope’s artists and executives.
Interscope is known for its pivotal role in urban music since its inception in 1990 and has long been at the forefront of hip-hop and contemporary culture. The label’s early releases, including Tupac Shakur’s 2Pacalypse Now, Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, and Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle, helped solidify its legacy. With this new initiative, Interscope is now focusing on HBCUs and the vibrant communities they nurture, ready to bring more excitement to campus.
The first phase of this campaign kicked off during Homecoming Week this fall, making stops at three renowned HBCU campuses: Howard University, Tennessee State University, and Texas Southern University. Students at each of these schools enjoyed immersive, student-led pop-up events that centered around the Homecoming SZN Compilation Vol. 1 album, a vinyl-only release from Interscope. The vinyl, available for purchase, features a hand-picked selection of Interscope catalog songs inspired by the exhilarating atmosphere of a true HBCU Homecoming, plus two exclusive tracks from rising artists.
The pop-ups brought more than just music—students were invited to use a photo booth, enter various giveaways, and have the chance to win concert tickets. The event also featured exclusive merchandise created in collaboration with Champion Sportswear, including stylish crewnecks and t-shirts decorated with original designs by Black multidisciplinary designer, Laci Jordan. Last but not least, each school also received customized vinyl artwork that celebrated its spirit, legacy, and energy:

Laura Carter, EVP of Urban Marketing at Interscope Geffen A&M Records, explained the importance of the initiative, saying,
Historically Black Colleges and Universities have produced some of the most prominent figures in our country’s history, but their contributions to music and culture are especially profound. This compilation project is an important step for us to deepen our ties with HBCUs and celebrate the unique role they play in shaping the future”
As part of its commitment to these iconic institutions, Interscope also pledged to donate $3 for every item sold to the related university, helping fund life-changing scholarships and internships for HBCU students. Texas Southern University’s Associate Vice President for Development and Alumni Engagement, Charlie Coleman III, expressed his excitement, noting that the partnership would empower students to pursue their passions and foster a new level of creativity and entrepreneurship.
Soon, Interscope plans to expand the initiative, with additional launches in Spring 2025 and the potential involvement of more HBCUs in the future. This initiative is not just about celebrating music—it’s about supporting student success, promoting community engagement, and preserving the legacy of HBCUs for generations to come.
For fans eager to experience the Homecoming SZN Compilation Vol. 1, the vinyl is available now. Keep an eye on future updates for more exciting collaborations!
