There’s something about a properly done sad pop bop that just really hits the spot. You could just be strolling through life happy as can be, but when you hear those moody tones and crooning vocals, your heart will still be stirred. That’s the powerful influence music can have on us. That’s the powerful influence Daisie‘s cover of “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” from the ultra-popular classic musical Grease, can have on listeners.
Dasie is a Salt Lake City, UT-based songwriter and indie-pop artist. She started writing songs as a little girl inspired by her love for the Disney Channel and Taylor Swift. After graduating with a degree in Commercial Music, she is diving into the indie-pop world with her debut release, which is this cover, and her EP that is set to release at the end of the year.
It’s a bold move – choosing the beloved classic from Olivia Newton-John to be a debut release. But in this case, Dasie took the chance and absolutely rocked it. She shares,
I have always loved the musical Grease and loved the lyrics that were in the song “Hopelessly Devoted to You.” I could relate so much to the lyrics that were in this song, but it didn’t quite feel the moody vibe I needed. I had the idea to take the lyrics and rework them into a moody pop arrangement. I changed up the harmony, added a new chorus, and this is what was created!
Dasie reinvents the song by giving listeners an entirely new sonic experience. Although the lyrics, for the most part, stay the same, the product is something that just sounds and even feels so different. The new moody atmosphere elevates the lyrics to fully bring out the emotion behind the words. Resounding piano chords introduce the soundscape, complementing the heartful vocals, and billow through hazy synths through the first verse and chorus. The emotional lyrics receive a stirring treatment through delicate vocal work and silky harmonies. The unique production gives this cover an entirely contemporary sensation, one that listeners would not find in the original.
