Surrendering to the volatility of life is a task many face with resistance; but not Hayes. The emerging Nashville multi-hyphenate seeks to share his perception of vulnerability through a comforting new single, “Come’s Around (Extended Mix).” It is his second independent single, released just in time to console heads and hearts through this unforgiving winter.
The track starts with a warm greeting of bubbly, filtered sounds, including a cool-toned, toy-like piano. An air of nostalgia quickly permeates the soundscape, leaving hints of solemnity and contemplation in its wake. Hayes.’s voice comes across as gentle and familiar, like an old friend, emphasized by the dry and intimate vocal production. The lyrics, which depict life’s complex, overlapping cycles, are simple, real, and universally relatable. Hayes. brings the listener into his deepest emotions, breaking down the barriers of ego through metaphors such as:
I know I’ve built circles in your head / ‘Cause I’ve been running laps all around them.
Just before the 3-minute mark, soft waves of color bloom from the track in the form of synths and key distortions. This vocally sparse second half allows even more space to soak in the ever-evolving production. The outro is grand and enveloping but does not necessarily feel like an outro; the dreamy nature of the track makes it feel eternal in the best way.
This curation of euphoric, iridescent instrumentals with a stripped-back, authentic story and sound exactly makes Hayes. a voice to watch in the independent music space. Although the current zeitgeist seems to reject certain levels of sincerity, they push forward in remaining raw in “Come’s Around (Extended Mix),” creating a timeless journey.
Hayes.’s growing discography will surely gain traction from a diverse audience, drawing inspiration from genres like ambient electronica, indie-pop, and more. His vibrant yet sentimental style is refreshing and deserves to be noticed.
